Dr Luke Hockey
Forensic Psychologist
Forensic Psychologist BAppSci (Psych), Grad Dip Psych, DPsych (Forensic)
I’m a registered Forensic Psychologist with a strong focus on treatment work with individuals who have offended—particularly those whose behaviour is linked to complex personal histories, risk factors, or unmet needs. I have a deep interest in supporting clients to understand the "why" behind their actions and to develop safer, more constructive ways of coping, relating, and functioning in the world.
A core part of my practice involves working with individuals who have cognitive or developmental disabilities, including intellectual disability, severe autism, or acquired brain injury. Many of these clients come into contact with the justice system not out of malice, but because of limited understanding of social rules, boundaries, or consequences. I’m passionate about working respectfully and compassionately with this group, offering clear, structured, and accessible interventions that balance accountability with support.
My therapeutic style is straightforward, practical, and collaborative. I’m not here to judge - I’m here to help clients understand their behaviour, build insight, and find realistic pathways toward change. I use evidence-based approaches tailored to each individual’s capacity, including:
- Motivational Interviewing – to build readiness and confidence in making changes
- Schema Therapy – to explore deep-seated patterns and early life experiences that may drive behaviour
- Risk-focused treatment planning – using structured frameworks to address dynamic risk factors, offence-related thinking, and harm reduction strategies
- Disability-aware interventions – ensuring therapy is accessible, paced appropriately, and built on trust and clarity
I’ve worked across custodial and community settings, and I understand the challenges many of my clients face - not only in changing behaviours but also in navigating systems that aren’t always built with their needs in mind. My goal is to provide a realistic, respectful, and empowering space for change.
